Ballet Vs Piano for 11 Plus CV

Post by PinnMum »

Hi, My 7 year daughter is working towards grade 1 piano and grade 1 ballet. I know that piano/music is a must for the 11plus CV, but how is ballet rated? Is it considered an equal skill to have or not? Advice appreciated. Thanks. Pinnmum :!:

Neither are musts. My DD is at an indie super selective and had only a term of music lessons. She has never been to ballet in her life. How your DC performs in the exams is important. The rest is peripheral.

Concur. Music/dance/art/etc is totally irrelevant unelss you're looking for a music scholarship at an independent school, in which case you need to be aiming for about grade 5 (give or take, depending partly on how oversubscribed the instrument is - avoid things like flute, clarinet, violin and piano if at all possible because there's just too much competition).

But both are good for the brain, and one is good for the body!

Agreed. My daughter is at Habs. She did one year of baby ballet and doesn't pay an orchestral instrument. Even if you apply to a top independent, neither are musts, but an active child who enjoys their hobbies will have a better chance at interview.

My DD didn't even have a getting into Cambridge C.V. Let alone an 11 plus one.

Chill.

Really.

If you need a scholarship at 11, then music can help. We chose grammar and turned the free places down. DS played two instruments (given up both now) and played plenty of sport (only swims now and not competitively), neither were required by Tonbridge who were only interested in his brain. DD didn't play an instrument, but did have sport and drama. Her scholarship/bursary was offered on character (I liked that), sport (running and swimming), academic and languages. The school made places available to children who they felt would benefit from a place (and obviously who would benefit them!) Interestingly, after a lovely flautist showed her around the school she took up the flute! Ballet would have helped at that school too as they looked at the individual talents the children had to offer.

Cambridge, unlike many other universities, are only interested in the academic!
