Tiffin Boys' Waiting List 2013

Post by nat47 »

Thought I'd kick this off since there doesn't seem to be a thread for this yet - other threads seem to be encompassing a range of issues and not specifically relevant for those on 229 and below.....

As of today 5 students would need to withdraw for 229 to qualify.

Sorry, the current qualifying score must be 230.

Has the number changed since the Tiffin admissions email arrived yesterday afternoon then?? I only ask because my understanding is only 2 need to withdraw in order for 229 to qualify and 12 ( a further 10) for 228 to qualify.

My son has 229, and the email yesterday indicated that he was in position 1. But I think this simply means that the current qualifying score is 230 (therefore all children with a score of 229 are in position 1). So I sent an email to admissions yesterday with the question of "how many withdrawals would be needed for anyone with the score of 229 to be admitted" to which I received the following reply this morning: "5 students need to withdraw".

Well I'm confused now. We got the email yesterday stating he was 12th on the waiting list, and I assumed( possibly wrongly now) that based on the original data
 Out of these 146 places offered, if 7 reject their places, offers will then be made to all those with a score of 230. A further 9 would have to reject their places for offers to be made to the next band, 229, and so on. Details are shown below.
 Waiting List: The waiting list will automatically consist of boys, in ranked score order who have not had a higher preference school offered to them. All applicants on the waiting list will be informed of their position on the waiting list by email on 18 April 2013.
Score
Number of boys on the same score
230
9
229
10
228
5
227
7
226
6
That as you state 229 would be position 1, so therefore 228 would all be 12th, this would mean that 2 on 230 or above would need to decline in order for 229 to be offered a place.
With that said if you are position 1 and the original data is correct( that there are 10 on 229) shouldn't that make 228's 11th, unless of course there is someone who didn't put is as first choice and then requested a place on waiting list. This being said if they scored higher than 229 originally wouldn't they be 1st and 229' joint 2nd.
Like I say I am a tad confused now, but nothing ever seems straight forward where Tiffins is concerned :-)
Oh well I wish you luck, I think you may be OK on 229 but I fear that may be the final cut off :-(

Doesn't it say in the prospectus that it works on distance for those on the same score
Therefore if 10 people are on 229, nearest gets the first place that comes free, then next nearest when another place comes free etc
If all the 229s get an offer, then it would be nearest on 228, followed by next nearest on 228 etc

The waiting list order would include the distance tiebreaker so could be a few places below someone on same score if you live quite a way from the school

Since there is no catchment restriction with Tiffin. Although a DS is 1st on W/L and Tiffin said 5 DSs would have to decline their place means there are 4 DSs with the same score and probably live closer to the school by distance. This is because when there is a tie on score, distance from school is the next selective criteria.
