is anyone trying for scholarships as well as for WCH...?

Post by kelwaypops »

just that really. would love to send dd to a different school if she doesn't get into WCH (aside from our local state which is still good) but cannot commit financially as both dh and i are self employed so it is unpredictable and thus scary for the next 7 years. we are trying dd for (music) scholarships for both forest and chigwell (dh went to chigwell). just curious tis' all :-)

We moved to Lbr recently as at the time, it was amongst the top 3 boroughs in the whole of England for secondary education results! That is an amazing thing considering the fact that we have West London & the Home Counties, let alone great pockets of affluence liberally spread across the nation. The relative ranking may have declined a bit recently, but we must count our blessings

A good friend has had his 3 children take 11+ exams & a whole host of independent school exams (including scholarships/bursaries) over the last few years. The first dd got into Forest & loves the atmosphere, handing over a WCHS place to someone else :D . One ds got into City of London Boys, & the last ds into Bancrofts. Another friend got into Forest from a comprehensive, & recently was offered Oxbridge options & scholarship to M.I.T. In the US. (He was the first in his family to go to university!)

He was so enamoured at this set of results that he kept encouraging me to try fields further afield e.g. City of London for Girls via scholarship. At the outset, even though I was strongly opting Forest as it is so near & has a welcoming reputation. My other half, seeing our current working class background, (& not visiting Forest) is more conservative. So, in the end we took the choice just to try for WCHS, or be very content with the relatively high performing Lbr comprehensives. After O levels, there is always a chance to do A levels at LAe Stratford, results permitting  .

i haven't gone for bankcrofts, not our cup to tea, for me it comes over as being too academic for our taste although i am sure it is a fab' school. tbh dh is very socialist and wants her to go to the local state school (which is doing well, so we hear) which is funny really as he went to chigwell from the age of 7 until after a levels and i went to a state school that was very average. my main concern tbh is the possibility of bad female influence :-( this does worry me as there are alot of WAG wannabees in Essex......

We are looking at scholarships too....I don't believe in putting all your eggs into one basket and there are quite a few good options opened to us...

What are you doing to push your child to scholarship standard? What pass percentages do you measure your child at when working at home?

to be really honest, we don't believe in pushing, she just happens to naturally be a gifted music student so are doing something that we feel is natural for her as we can't afford to pay the full fee. she is going for a music scholaship although may as well go for an academic one too as she is clever but we aren't the type of people to pressure her ie no test papers etc, she doesn't really do any preparation at home, just a bit of homework her tutor sets her and the odd bit of work from a Bond book. her education is important to us but we want her to be happy and have a grounded childhood too. she has an hour music lesson once a week (she plays violin and piano) and has just passed her grade 5 piano with disinction, very proud indeed :-) for the audition she will play two piano pieces and one violin piece and something special in addition that she has up her sleeve. she does have a tutor once a week to familiarise her with verbal and non verbal questions but it is only one hour a week. competition if fierce for scholarships, my take on it is that she will probably end up at the local comp although there are many good kids that go there and go on to uni' of which we hope she will be one of them. i know many people that went to private school, most of which didn't secure good careers...
