how is the actual school picked???

Post by d2001 »

Hi All,

Once the kent 11 plus is over and results are received in oct, could someone advise how the actual school is selected and what chance we have of getting into a desired school? will we receive a rack of school order and chance of getting a place? Any advise of how the actual selection works would be appreciated.

Hello

You have asked quite a big question! It would help a little if you indicated vaguely where you are. In some areas if you are in catchment and your DC passed the 11 plus, you just need to put the relevant GS on your CAF form on the KCC website and you should be get a place. However, some other parts of Kent and a bit more tricky :-( Where abouts are you and do you have a boy or girl?

Hi

It's a boy that keeps me busy :-)

We currently live in east london but are looking forward to moving to kent once we know where he'll get a place. ideally, somewhere which is commutable to london. i'm just completely confused about which school he may get a place based on his score.... is there any info on the web or links you could suggest?

KCC will allocate you with the highest ranked school that you are eligible for.

Ie. if you pas the 11+, then the you will be given your number 1) school. If this is full, or you are not eligible (eg. Out of catchment), then you will be given your number. 2) school. Etc etc.

hi
i thought the process was supposed to be different this year :? there are several GS in kent, if we only get the score then we don't know which school will accept the application. i believe the councils are supposed to tell use if we have a chance of getting a place in the GS before we apply, Otherwise, we could end up applying for GS where we don't have a reasonable chance of getting in.... will the council provide a 11+ socre and a list of eligible GS with a good chance of getting a place?

This is the information on the Kent CC website: https://shareweb.kent.gov.uk/Documents/ ... 20book.pdf As with any area (if you are currently in East London, are you also applying in Essex?), most GSs are likely to be oversubscribed, so it is important to look at the oversubscription criteria for each school you are interested in applying to. I assume that you either have visited or will be visiting them?

I have no idea how Kent CC presents the results of the Kent Test with regard to advice, but last year in Essex, the CSSE gave advice as to recent lowest scores achieving admission to the various schools, and how "safe" various scores were.

As for the actual application for a place, this is by naming all the schools to which you wish to apply on the CAF (Common Application Form) supplied by your home local authority, wherever in the country the schools are, and in your true order of preference.

Many thanks toadMum, looks like we'll have to find Kent schools that primarily decide on scores rather than home distance.

be careful as this is quite high risk - the schools who are allocating on score are in West Kent and the scores can be very high. Also the cutoff is not known until the places are allocated in March - you would have to take a decision when filling in the CAF as to whether the score is high enough - no one will be able to tell you exactly.

This is a bit from the EPE info on Kent:
Pass mark: The minimum qualifying score in 2011 was an aggregate score of 360 across the Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and maths papers, with no paper scoring less than 119. Schools in East Kent allocate places by distance and therefore any mark over 360 is irrelevant beyond the fact that the child has qualified. Schools in West Kent (many of them the so-called “super-selectives”) allocate school places by score, in descending order and therefore the child’s final score is of critical importance. The English test is not marked.
