Hi flanbadan.

Your son has done very well - he is above the mean score in a very competitive examination. Any child who prepares for and takes this exam has achieved.

As you can see from the grammar schools page http://www.kingedwardthesixth.org/offers.htm, your son's score is lower than any of the lowest qualifying scores for the grammar schools last year. The score for Handsworth Grammar were based on a different exam last year, so there is no comparison available. Historically the scores have risen year on year, but because there is likely to be additional forms at the KE schools in September 2014, they may possibly drop. But it is unlikely that they would drop enough for his score to admit him in CHB, Fiveways, Aston or Bishop Vesey as a ten point drop (for last year's BV score) would encompass a very large number of children.

However, Handsworth Grammar has historically been the school where those who miss out on KE schools often gain a place. So it is possible that his score of 207 may be enough for there and it would definitely be worth putting the school on your LA form. You should ensure that your form includes a good alternative school to the grammars in case your son does not gain a place.

Hi flanbadan

Planning medical studies for your Year 6 son is quite ambitious! Do bear in mind that he may turn out to want to be an engineer, a research chemist, a journalist or an actor. Or something else. Kids change their minds and develop aptitudes all the way through school. A good young friend of ours had parents who encouraged her to take science A levels in the hope of her studying something in the medical line. She is now very happily studying to be a primary school teacher specialising in drama.

No schools specialise in medical studies. Some may have science specialisms, but these specialisms are a hangover from a system that no longer operates in the school system. I do not know those schools (we are in Sandwell) but if you have visited and studied their Ofsted reports, website etc you should have an idea of how good they are. Academy status is simply a way of managing the school - nothing to do with the standards at the school. In Sandwell practically every school is an academy, so that's what is chosen. What makes you suspicious about academies? Many failing schools have been academised and given a good new lease of life. All the grammar schools are academies, as they then have more control over their curriculum and finances.

PS Do also remember that your son can always move school for sixth form. Many of the grammar schools have large sixth forms and successful children from other schools move over.
