Catchment question

Post by Saltylerjoel »

Could anyone tell me if you are classed as in catchment if you move into the priority area by January (or March) please?
Thank you.

Not sure if it's the same for all areas, but our LA has a cut off date of January ( think 17thish) and you can notify them of change of address by then . You might find out this information in the booklet that your DC was given at school explaining admission process.

Home address
Applications will normally be processed on the basis of the home address for the child at the time of application and determination, unless, where the home address changes, proof of an exchange of contracts or copy of a tenancy agreement are provided by 6 January 2014. The home address is considered to be the address at which the child resides on a permanent basis or is ‘ordinarily resident’.

This is from the Southend Secondary School Admissions booklet:

19th January 2014: Cut off date for change of address. Address changes after this date will be considered after national offer day.

Edited to add - guess since you are asking, you are not in Southend, though

The schools take addresses very seriously. If you move then it has to be genuine.

Thank you all for your replies, I thought January came into it somewhere. There is no question of it not being a genuine move, we've already sold our house and are awaiting a moving date.

Its a very tricky question, the following is from the Essex CC admissions booklet;-

If you know you are moving to Essex before the
closing date for applications but are not able to
provide evidence by that date, you must apply for
Essex schools via your home authority.

If this evidence is received after 6 January 2014,
we cannot guarantee that your application will be
processed using your new address. If your child
is subsequently placed on a waiting list where
the position is influenced by home address,
your new address will be used to determine your
position

My understanding is that before 31st you must have agreed a deal on a property, so you show absolute intent on moving to essex but your exchange of contracts may take time so you have until 6th Jan to show evidence. Else your application will be dealt as a late application.
Other members may be able to verify, or counter, this by their knowledge or experience.

A question, is this a reactive move ?

The main reason for moving is to be nearer to the Grandparents (as I feel the kids have been missing out by not seeing them as much as they'd like) and also because I work in the area. The fact that DS has passed the 11+ and wants to go to the grammar school is obviously an added bonus.
I really wanted to check if it all goes through before January then would it be in time to be in with the 3rd March offers or a late application. Thank you all for the information. :)
