Help with Bond question

A population showed men and women being 1537. Women and children are 1007. How do you get the number of men, women and children with no other information given. and what is the logic. I have checkedthe answer but cant seem to get the logic behind it.

I don't think its possible with only that information.

From those facts the population could be anything between 1537 and 2544.

The other inferences we can state from what is given:

We can see that there are 530 more men than children (i.e. 1537-1007)
Women and children must each be <= 1007.
Men must each be <= 1537.

Extreme example 1 (maximum men): 1537 men, no women. Then children would be 1007
Total population. 2544

Extreme example 2 (mimimum men) i.e. 1007 women, no children, so men would be 530.
Total population. 1537

Pick any number of men between 530 and 1537 and it works.

e.g. If we guessed 767 men, 770 women. Then children would be 767-530 = 237
That would correctly mean women (770)+ children (237) were 1007.

Ah we now have the total population as 2015

so we have M + W + C = 2015
W+ C = 1537
W + M = 1007
so adding these 2 together gives: 2W + C + M = 2544
so the extra "W" = 529

so 529 + C = 1537 hence C = 1008
and M = 478

So you know that

men + women + children = 2015
men + women = 1007
women + children = 1537

so if you add men + women + women + children = 1007 + 1537 = 2544

BUT you have counted women twice ,

so 2544 - 2015 = 529
therefore you have 529 women

From this you can work out children as women + children = 1537
ie 529 + children = 1537
so children = 1008
men + 529 = 1007
men = 478

To me this is just simple subtraction:

If you subtract (m+w) from the total population you get the figure for children (2015-1007=1008)
You then subtract 1008 from the total of (w+c) to get the figure for women (1537-1008=529)
Lastly subtract 529 from 1007 to arrive at 478 for men.

I'm certain a 9-10 year old would do it this way or similar.

It was a good question in its original form. It was baffling in the version with which the thread opened and might explain why it could not be done.

I think frangipani's method is the one most primary teachers would teach.
