tricky question - need help teaching dc technique to answer
i would appreciate any help with how to teach dd a good technique to answer the following type of questions
questions are both from GL Variety pack 8 (and maybe the same as paper 4 from pack 2 verbal reasoning) Qn 48 & 49 page 6
I found question 49 the more difficult out of the 2, so putting it first....
Question 49
Bury, Highpark, Priory, Lands and The Green are primary schools.
They all competed in a Year 6 football knockout.
Each school played all the other schools.
The only schools that did not draw any matches were Highpark and Lands.
If these statements are true, only one of the sentences below cannot be true. Which one?
A Each school played four games.
B Bury drew two matches.
C There were three drawn games.
D Twenty games were played in all. (D - This is the answer....not sure why!)
E Priory won the tournament.
Question 48
Only Jamie, Rida, Tom and Lorna ran in the egg and spoon race on sports day.
The winner did not drop the egg.
All the children finished the race
Tom passed Lorna.
Only Jamie dropped the egg.
Lorna finished before Rida.
If these statements are true, only one of the sentences below must be true. Which one?
A Rida finished before Jamie.
B Jamie was last.
C The eggs were hard boiled.
D Jamie cracked his egg.
E Tom won the race. (E - This is the answer)
the answer for 48 is obvious to me, however what is the technique that should be taught to dd???

Q49. Each team played each other, so 5 teams playing each other is 5 x 4 = 20. They then play more games for example semi-final and final so the total number of games is greater than 20

5 teams each played 4 games. But there are two teams in each game - so only 10 matches!

there are only 10 games - you can even draw a table for your child to see how this is the answer
Lets say the teams are A, B, C, D, E
A will play against B, C, D, E
B will play against C, D, E (already played against A)
C will play against D, E (already played against A, B)
D will play against E (already played against A, B, C)
In 48 you eliminate the ones you know are definitely wrong and the ones which are not mentioned in the clues as these are unknowns. Draw a table with all the facts in a way the child can understand - sometimes data presented in a different format makes more sense
From the clues you know that Tom has gone past Lorna who is ahead of Rida. It is also mentioned that the winner did not drop their egg and as Jamie dropped his egg, he can't be the winner.

We use a table too, with each team on each axle, then put ticks or crosses or blanks as appropriate. Not read your example questions (post 11+ now, brings me out in hives ) but would put
A. B. C. D. Etc
B
C
D
Etc
With lines between all and ticks etc. This really helped us.
