pick simple topics and try to write few lines on each. Try to get the flow and grammar right in the beginning. When this is mastered start adding the finer points like adjectives, speech, etc. Tyr to write in first person as that is the easiest to start with.

Discuss the ideas with her and then get her to put them in writing.

After reading a book/short story, try writing a review.

Pick any object and try to write at least 10-15 lines about it eg. - a pencil, cello tape, lamp post, pencil eraser, etc. This will help to develop her thinking skills and she will be able to write about any topic as she is forced to think of various aspects of an item.

How long have you known about this? Has she been getting any extra help from the school? She is a long way below the Level 4 that the government expects the average child in the UK to be on by May of Y6. She needs to be writing all the time, every day and she will gradually improve. Being able to write is absolutely a skill that can be taught. What is her teacher like? What was her writing level at the end of Year 2? Have you been given her levels every year? DG

What was her level in Y4. Has it improved? Has the school offered you any extra help? Is the TA in the class running any booster sessions. At our old primary booster English and Maths sessions were available every morning before school and every afternoon after school for all those Y6's not on Level 4. DG

If she is not expected to get level 3 then she will not be entered for the Sats , but she is quite close. I am very surprised that there has not been some intervention.

This gives examples of writing at all levels from 2 to 6.

http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/tea ... ng-mod-ks2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To get a higher level, she will need to use different types of punctuation e.g comma, full stop, queston and exclamation marks, speech marks if appropriate and maybe brackets and ellipse ...

They also look for sentences started in different ways e.g Suddenly we, or startled by the noise , running across the field, he... we usually get the children to think of ed ing ly ..

Use adjectives and more ambitious verbs.

Try a sentence eg

The cat purred. Then expand it.

The furry cat purred.

The furry cat, purred loudly.

When the boy stroked the beautiful, furry cat, it purred loudly.

Purring loudly, the cat let the boy stroke it.

You can turn it into a game, taking turns.

Writing is teacher assessed so there is no test.

Look at old KS2 papers on http://www.emaths.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and you will see where she could improve in Reading.

The link I gave you is the advice and examples for teacher assessment moderation this year and will give you some idea of the progression.

With reading the higher levels expect some sort of inference from the text and often asks the child to provide evidence from the written text. This is the area that often proves difficult. We have been looking at past reading papers and working through them together, getting the children to explain their answers and suggesting how they could improve. You could also try reading together and asking her questions about the text, e.g. why do you think he used that word? Why did the boy give that answer? what words has the writer used to convey the tension etc.

There is a test of writing within the spag test. It was new last year. It is worth looking at in detail. What is her English like now in terms of what she can say and what she can understand when people speak?

What is her writing like in her native language?
