Late Kent Test, no Head Teacher Appeal

Post by phingers »

Hi,

My daughter took a late test in January because we had emigrated abroad last year before the main test was taken. We came back in November (one of the reasons being the fact the education was very poor in the country we moved to) so that she would be in school in time to be able to take it.

Her scores were:

Verbal Reasoning: 141
Non-Verbal:119
Maths: 116
Cumulative score: 376

Because it was a late test she did not do the writing exercise.

She is predicted to attain high level 5s for Reading, Writing and Maths and is in a primary school which is in the top 25% performing primary schools in the country.

The pass mark was 118 in each section (cumulative score 360) and as you can see from the scores she very narrowly missed out on her maths score only. We spoke to her Head Teacher who said that there would definitely have been a Head Teacher appeal but the fact it was a late test meant that this was not allowed. There were Head Teacher appeals for some children who got scores of 118 in each section (354 cumulative).
This seems very unfair, as she has not been given the same chance as those other children who got 22 points overall score lower than she did.

The Head Teacher will write us a letter of support for our appeal, and we will cite extenuating circumstances due to the stress of the emigration and repatriation and the poor education she received while abroad. She has also demonstrated by her current levels that she has worked hard to increase her levels despite this.

I'm pretty confident of our reasons for appeal but I'd like the opinion of anyone with experience to confirm her chances please.

Any advice much appreciated.

Which school(s) are you appealing to - if you can tell us this people with experience of those schools may be able to help you more.

Try and find out if the school(s) have taken over PAN in the past, and if so how many by.

Obviously you will be appealing for non-quali and perhaps over-subscription too so gather plenty of evidence of her ability, predicted SATS results, improvement since taking the test etc..

Is there anything that you can use to connect your DD to the school(s) you are appealing to - e.g. music specialism

Good luck.

Thanks for reply.

The secondary school is allowed to take 4% over pan so we will be appealing for one of those places.
