Net capacity

Post by NorthLondonMummy »

Having asked for this document, I have received a 10 page document by email after a few days of my request.

It is full of technical measurements in a spreadsheet, but I think these are the information

capacity based on planned admission no: 1460
Net Capacity: 1460 ( in bold at the end of the report)

The school has an attached 6th form, so
On this technical form, the sixth form data had

number of age groups: 6.76 n (in a box with the n outside)

I was given the total children from Yr7 to y11 adding to 1091 - Should I ask for sixth form?

Please can someone shed light on this or PM me on how to analyse this information and fight my case on oversubcription.

They have given me also, the number of teaching staff and SEN etc Year 7-year13

Does this mean they have space?

Glad to hear they co-operated by responding quite promptly to your request.

Depends whether you want to compare the total number on roll with the net capacity - but broadly speaking this would only affect communal areas.

I'd also look to see whether the "indicated admission number" and the published admission number are the same or similar.
Does this mean they have space?
On the information you've given, in overall terms probably not - but even if they did, it wouldn't really help you if it's in another part of the school!

I would have thought class size in the relevant year group is what actually matters.

If you want to study the finer points of net capacity you'll find a link to the DfE's guidance here:

To be honest, though, I think time would be better spent refining your own case, not expending too much energy on the AA case.
Even if you were to identify any serious flaws in the school case, assuming there are numerous other appellants, it would benefit them (i.e. "the competition") too!

I doubt whether an appeal panel will want to get bogged down in the minutiae of the net capacity formula .......
We offer advice on the best way to tackle the admission authority's case here:

Thank you for your reply.

Should I ask them again, about the class capacity for Year 7 only?

One selective school, allows the child to attend the Appeal - any thoughts on this?

I asked the same selective school, regarding Net capacity, teacher numbers etc but no reply - are they not obliged to give it, as the child didn't get an offer because of not ranking high enough with the exam? They were quick with the child's exam score requests, though.

They wouldn't know what to send you!

Numbers in year groups might be more useful.

Generally speaking, you can request anything that is reasonable and relevant to your appeal.
I don't think not being ranked high enough changes this.

However, if this happens to be an academy, they are not required to have a net capacity.

It would be worth reading through the Q&As - you will find answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet! :?
