Clock /time questions

Hi all, My child (yr 4) struggles with clock/time related word problems. Could you pls suggest a 'systematic' way to teach 'time' topic? We,ve done related worksheets previously, but it has occurred to me that she is normally stuck at time etc problems as the concept isn't clear. Pls help!! Thank you very much.

Have you tried real problems?

"in 15 minutes time, you can take a break" or use the television section of the paper to work out how long to her favorite programme, work out times for journeys e.g. to school/clubs It takes us 15 mins to get there we need to be there by 8.45 - when should we leave?

A lot of children find time difficult, especially using an analogue clock or watch.

I have found that a number line is good - count along in gaps of, say, 5 minutes writing in key times e.g. hours.

Also, in any mixed word prolegs, always leaves out time related ones!

Buy a geared clock face from power of 2. Use it first of all to practice telling the time, then for finding the gap between two times, draw out timelines too as g55 suggests. Then start doing simple time problems with and without the geared clock face.

You have yo go right back to the basics and build up to find out the shaky bits and improve them. Power of 2 does a good basic book about time too which will not take long to complete.
