Weekend job and 4 AS Levels - doable??

Post by Minesh »

DC will start AS levels in Sept. and is keen to get a job perhaps Sat. and one evening per week.
Friends at a local good comprehensive seem to be doing this in well known supermarkets - 10-12 hours but one evening per week.

I hesitate as with sport training one evening per week is the jump to AS not much so can afford this time working or am I being neurotic??

Some would argue DC wastes or hangs around at least for 7 hours on Sat. anyway so may as well be working.
How have others with experience found this - incidentally school encourages 4 AS :D

Personally, I keep hinting to DS1 that he might find it pleasant to have a bit more money to spend in return for giving up a bit of his spare time, but it has no effect  . His girlfriend seems to be doing fine whilst also spending her Sundays in paid employment; at their school the normal 'tariff' in year 12 is 4 ASs plus General Studies.

Lots of students do this and as my dd already has a job (been working for almost a year now) I certainly hope it is do-able.

I know some if the students where she works (Bettys) either give up as their exams approach or switch to seasonal work.

I would say it depends on what else your dc do during the week and how they manage their time. For what they gain from a jib I would say it is sooooooo worth it - apart from anything else it looks good on their PS/CV.

Our GS advised not more than 11 hours of paid (or voluntary, obviously) on top of four ASs. I think it's good for them to work, whether paid or voluntary (or both might be ideal!).

Agreed....let him get a job.

See if he can get one over summer, the shops and supermarkets often need summer staff to cover holidays, this will give him first dibs at weekend and evening work and get him used to working before he has to do his homework as well. Try and opt for a big national chain and then he may be able to transfer branches if he decided to go on to college after sixth form.

My daughter did, and her results were excellent.

The job gave her lots of confidence too.

I agree with others - a job is a good idea.

My DD (just finished Yr12) did 4 AS levels, worked about 8-9 hrs a week (Sunday & one evening), played sport all day Saturday & still fitted in a lot of sport training / socialising. She's also expected to pitch in at home - this was a bit hit & miss though!

So we're all agreed it's a good idea. But how do you wrestle the lazy blighter out of his bedroom and make him go and find a job :? ?
