Problem with problem solving

Post by Stressed?Moi? »

Can anyone suggest a good resource for maths problem solving. DS needs a bit of help on the old "If Emily's favourite colour is green and she has 20p at the beginning of the week and leaves home at 07.15 then how many horses does she own" type questions. Free downloads would be fab. Thanks.

try Manchester grammar paper 2 for past few years, St Paul's samples, Habs Boys - all available to download from respective websites. Only MGS has answers (no working out) so you have to do the rest yourself

Sorry, no, it's just my daft sense of humour :D . Although probably no more silly than people who write exam papers for 10 year olds expecting them to know what inertia and oblique are!

Thanks leanmeamum, will pop across the sites for a look. Cheers.

Not directly Maths problem-solving, but you could also look in newsagents / bookshops for 'Logic Puzzle' magazines or books. These are what I usually refer to as 'Who owns the Zebra?' puzzles, after the first one I saw as a child, in a booklet which came with a copy of 'Readers' Digest' :D . Good for a bit of light-hearted brain-stretching, anyway.

Was thinking of starting him on Sudoku, so will look into this as well.
