could someone help me explain how you get the the answer to the following question in a way that ds can use it again.

A - B = 48

A + B = 120


ANSWR IS 84 AND 36.

Is this a real 11+ question?

Have a think about what happens when you add the two equations ...

The question was given to me as one of many by a very expeienced tutor.

I seriously doubt it would appear in an 11+ in that format ...

It might br possible to get something like:

Jane buys a cup of coffee and a cup cake for £1.75.

Iqbal buys two coffees and a cup cake for £3.

How much is a cup cake?

Agree with Guest55. Question is not likely to appear in 11+ in this format.

It is more likely to be in the form of

Samantha is 48 years younger than her grandmother. Their combined age is 120 years. How old is Samantha?

Yes your both rite, the question style was given to me by the tutor to then explain to ds so that he could apply it to other question styles. We didnt expect the question to come in this format only for us to use the same principal in trying to answer the question. Hope that makes sense. But if some1 could explain how to get the answer in very simple terms that would be useful as i'm poor at maths. thanks all

Algera isn't intended for these questions - look at my example:

Jane buys a cup of coffee and a cup cake for £1.75.

Iqbal buys two coffees and a cup cake for £3.

How much is a cup cake?

Iqbal buys one more coffee - how much extra is his bill? That must be the cost of a coffee.
