BIDMAS or left to right

Is it the case with straightforward maths calculations that you always do them in the order of BIDMAS or would you do bracekts/indices, then divide, then multiply and then go left to right with remaining any + or - ?

Someone might correct me on this, but with he GL maths questions I've seen they purposely wrote them so it doesn't matter.
Think that's because some kids won't have been taught bodmas, so they can't be expected to use it and some will, and they can't be expected not to.
