Area Question

Carpet is sold on rolls 3m wide, and at a cost of £11 per square metre. How much will it cost
to carpet the room shown below?

L shape room

answer £330 DS got £110

He has forgotten the carpet is 3 metres wide ... 10 metres in length but x 3.

Thanks Guest55. 30m sq is the room. Price for 1m sq is 11 so 11 x 30 = £330 that is straight forward.

But when do you use the 3m wide roll in the calculation, is this relevant?

From your diagram, he needs 3x3 = 9sqm for the top part of the room and 7x3=21sqm for the lower part.
In total he needs 30sqm. Since the cost is £11sqm, the carpet will cost £330. Does that help?

I imagined a strip across the top portion from left to right ie 3metres length of the 3 m wide carpet.

Then another strip 7 m long - so 10 metres of carpet 3m wide.

Then £11 x 3 (width of carpet) x 10 (length of strip) so I did not bother to work out the area as there is no need.
