Still emotional..

Post by Medmama »

My daughter failed Medway and was absolutely distraught as we are in Medway and lots of her friends (from her kent primary) passed and were making plans about going to Medway grammars.
Her school advised us to appeal. Yesterday she came home and was so pleased that her reading level had increased to a 5c, I congratulated her and told her to carry on the good work and this would all be good for appeal. Then she got the Kent pass and she was so shocked and happy. She really could not believe that something she worked so hard for paid off (as it hadn't done with Medway). That evening she decided to view a Medway grammar as she finally felt she was worth doing so and had earned a place. She liked it and came out focussing on an appeal.

Then this morning she saw Invicta and her decision is now made and secured in her mind...

Only thing is it's a bus at 0730 and she will get home at 1630. So she will go from me dropping her at the school gates and picking up to having to navigate her own way... 'Cut the apron strings' I hear, but it only seems like yesterday she was that little 3 year old with her little backpack going to nursery... But I was hearing of 11 year olds travelling from Bexley to Invicta so I'm telling myself to get a grip.

Feeling old and overwhelmed

Don't be so hard on yourself Medmama.

11+ is a roller coaster but at least it is all over now. Remember you have the rest of year 6 to get your head around the secondary transfer. It is amazing how they grow in year 6 and all of a sudden they just seem ready. Hang on there, it will get better.

Don't worry they suddenly grow up and are ready to leave primary. My son leaves home
at 7 o'clock and returns home at 5 he too was dropped off at the primary gate each morning and collected to going on a bus but he has taken to it like a duck to water and loves his secondary school the journey is well worth it for the right school and the fact they are happy. Good luck and enjoy year 6 it flies by ....

I echo what everyone else is saying, around Easter time my son suddenly outgrew his primary school (literally taller than his teacher & the head!) they are so ready to move on by the time the summer arrives.

My son leaves at 7.15 and returns around 5, he was always dropped off and picked up at the school gate, so don't worry too much.

They soon turn into grunting teenagers, so make the most of it!

Hi Medmama

Glad she got the result in the Kent - good that we have these choices! My DD walks to school and leaves at 0750 and gets back at 1550 (walks v slowly home!), so your DD won't have a much longer day.

We know someone who does the reverse - lives in Maidstone, failed Kent, passed Medway and comes to RGS everyday and is quite fine with it.

And Invicta is a great school. Plus if you are still unsure, do the appeal without telling your DD and see what happens.

Thanks all I'm glad that there are already so many that do this kind of travel time and distance x

Samlet it's just flaming typical, but I am a firm believer in fate and think this has happened for a reason... Still taking her to look at CGSG and FP next week (much to her annoyance), but she still wants to look at another non grammar mixed school in maidstone which she loved before all the tests!!
