Potential Kendrick Cutoff

Post by Curious__George »

**Updated 24 Oct**

In the light of new information that 1250 out of 3500 qualified in Slough consortium, revising the table and the cutoff. This indicates that a much larger number of people have got higher scores than previously thought. Due to this, my expected cutoff would be in the region of 113 to 113.5.

Based on the highest score known, the total number of candidates and a series of other scores posted in the forum so far for Kendrick, I have worked out a rough model to determine the likely cutoff this year.

Kendrick score | Percentile | Cumulative # of students above

Score Percentile Cumulative above
134.70 | 99.75% | 3
128.36 | 98.87% | 12
127.21 | 98.55% | 16
126.00 | 98.14% | 20
125.00 | 97.72% | 25
124.95 | 97.70% | 25
124.55 | 97.51% | 27
123.34 | 96.87% | 34
122.50 | 96.34% | 40
120.53 | 94.82% | 57
119.41 | 93.75% | 69
119.35 | 93.69% | 69
117.96 | 92.12% | 87
117.88 | 92.02% | 88
117.74 | 91.85% | 90
116.98 | 90.85% | 101
116.01 | 89.45% | 116
115.00 | 87.83% | 134
114.77 | 87.44% | 138
113.97 | 86.01% | 154
113.52 | 85.16% | 163
113.50 | 85.12% | 164
113.00 | 84.13% | 175
112.62 | 83.36% | 183
112.50 | 83.11% | 186
112.00 | 82.03% | 198
111.50 | 80.92% | 210
111.00 | 79.77% | 223
110.50 | 78.57% | 236
110.00 | 77.34% | 249

Please take this with a pinch of salt & dont get disheartened by what you see, as this is only a hunch. Please do as much research as possible to determine your preference on the CAF.

How did you decide the number of children scoring that numbers?
I am trying to create something similar for Reading Boys...

If you have seen the Kendrick calculator, its the same approach. Google it.

Since the total number of students will include quite a few OOC & there will also be instances of some students not taking up Kendrick despite being eligible, I would say if a child is within the top 140, they stand a very good chance. I have looked at previous years results and this seems to be the case. The 111.5 is based on that.

110.50 | 85.31% | 162
110.00 | 84.13% | 175

I have assumed a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 10 on the basis that kendrick competition is higher & so the variance wont be big. On this basis, I expect the cutoff to be around 111.5. hi Curious_George - thanks for this info. I just ran a quick test on my DDs Kendrick result using this formula in excel (=NORMDIST(score, 100, 15, TRUE) and I think your SD of 10 can't be right. Increasing the SD from 15 to 20 lowers her % score, decreasing the SD from 15 to 10 increases her % score? So if Kendrick is more competitive than e.g. slough wouldn't the SD have increased and not decreased?

Run the formula with SD of 10, not 15. I tried many combinations and settled on that based on the known high score. In my view, when the competition is tougher, the standard deviation will be lower as results are likely to bunch up more together.

In previous years the rank has gone down to 120-130 ish, however I suspect there is possibly a larger amount of ooc scores. Against in the previous two years we would have had ooc sitters who then had the option of moving in, but if they were taking several tests probably didn't bother. Not quite sure of the effect either way.

GL used a SD of 15 and that is what is used in the calculator. I have no idea whether CEM use the same.

I don't think you have any good reason to believe that the standard deviation will be 10. On a standardised scale it is not affected by the level of competition or anything else. They can standardise it to anything they want!

In fact the majority of educational/aptitude tests including IQ tests and the tests that CEM discuss on their website are standardised to a mean of 100 and a sd of 15. Of course they may have done something different, but I've not yet seen anything to convince me that there is any better hypothesis than a sd of 15.

What I really don't understand is why they don't just give parents this information with the standardised score.

CEM seem to tailor the scores (standard deviation) to what the customer (school/s) want.

Their major product MidYIS uses sd@15.

So it would make sense (if sense enters the world of here's a score to help you but.........no further information) for CEM and Kendrick to use 15, to be consistent with previous years and produce a ranking.

Other shared score areas have a different agenda and sd.

As always, we don't know, so rank your CAF according to your real preferences. :)

Xpost with langtreemum.............great minds.
