Oxbridge entrance records for the Grammar schools

Post by quasimodo »

I have tried to research this on the internet but it is difficult to find recent information. I am aware for WGHS from what the headmistress has said at the open days over the last 2 years the school had 13 girls who met their offers in 2013 and 5 in 2014.For QMHS it was 2 girls in 2014 from their website. It would be appreciated if forum users could advise upon this for the last 5 years for both girls and boys. It doesn't affect our school choices but it would allow an assessment of the Oxbridge outreach programme.

I would immediately say that with such low numbers you cannot possible surmise if one school better than the other. It maybe more useful if you knew how many children went for the oxbridgea nd how many qualified, so if of 10 girls only 1 managed it that would be more meaningful, but with such low numbers an overall how many is not very useful.

This is a specific question about the outreach programme. Not about assessments about the Grammar schools. Many qualities make a good school and those qualities change over time. I personally know boys and girls who have gone to Oxbridge over the last few years from a number of the schools, whether it be to study law from WGHS, history from KE Handsworth or engineering from QM Boys. I know Oriel was the link college for KE Handsworth and forms part of the outreach programme. This is to gain information in an informed way.
Our choices of school for my dd were made a number of weeks ago. If I make a negative comment about any school and your child goes to that school please don't take it personally they are made on our assessments and experiences. The whole purpose of the forum is to assist and inform. I wish to be informed.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.

I was seeking this information for all the boys and girls in the Wolverhampton and Birmingham consortiums.

he Good Schools Guide has, since 2004, had its own take on this, with its unique 'Cambridge Qualifying' marker. This includes only those pupils who would have reached a typical Cambridge university offer of A*AA in academic subjects or their equivalent at International Baccalaureate and/or Pre-U (Pre-U is a course designed, in conjunction with Cambridge, especially to stretch and challenge the very best students at advanced level - with top grades garnering UCAS points beyond A* at A level).

Independent schools dominate the top of the table, with London schools - St Paul's Girls School, Westminster School and St Paul's School - occupying the top 3 positions. Only one state school, the highly selective The Henrietta Barnett School makes the top 10. Independent schools account for 80% of schools in the top 200.

The results below have been averaged across 3 years of results - 2009/10/11. Subscribers to this website can compare schools - using measures such as the Cambridge Qualifying Standard and value-added. We also feature, on individual school pages (for subscribers), the universities students go on to and the courses they take.

A complete list of the subjects we include is found at the foot of this article.

If 10 girls got offers and only one managed it would really show that something had gone wrong with the A levels at that school. It would demonstrate to me some very talented girls had failed to get their A* grades and for the Arts courses at Oxford their A grades. It would shock me if a good school didn't react in such circumstances and would be a strong warning sign in the same way the number of girls who made their first university offers or the types of courses they got onto and into which universities.
My eldest dd has a poster on the wall in her room at university which states" Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footsteps on the moon." There is nothing wrong in reaching for excellence in any field of life even if you don't get to its very limits.

Thank you for the weblink what I was after were the actual figures for the number of children getting places from 2009 to 2014 to Oxford or Cambridge from the schools to allow assessment de facto of the outreach programme rather than what the Universities say themselves. But if anyone wants to widen it to studies at top universities in the USA I don't mind. This information is readily available for the KE Independents. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you contact the foundation office then for specifics , rather than try to conduct a haphazard straw poll on the forum.
