Travel from SL6 and surrounding areas to Kendrick

Post by berks_mum »

Good morning everyone. Now we have the task of making our final choices for timely CAF submission.

If you have DCs commuting from Cookham, Furze Platt, Maidenhead, Taplow, Burnham to Kendrick/Reading boys would you please share your experiences. Buses/Trains/Coaches/car share?

I have the misfortunate of having to do this journey every day - albeit in the opposite direction. By road the journey is IMHO horrid. The A4 is slow - and the M4 has just turned into a giant car park every day - which I think has little to do with the roadworks, and more to do with the fact that it is just at breaking point now with the volume of cars and HGVs. In terms of trains I couldn't comment. Good luck with making your choice.

rg45mum, yes I am very aware of the traffic scenario, in fact it was the main reason we moved to Berks from London. So me driving DD to school everyday is out of question. But train option is not too bad. For example, Trains from Taplow or Maidenhead have just 1/2 stops to Reading taking around( 11 - 20mins). I read that a lot of girls walk from Reading station to Kendrick school and is not too far.

I know a girl in DDs class lives in Maidenhead. (Just checked the contacts list  )

Loads of girls catch trains or buses into Reading. The older sister of a girl in DDs class said that if a girl managed to get lost on the way to school, that would be some sort of record. There will be a sea of red jumpers walking to the school from the train station, and certainly in the first few weeks the older girls seem to know who the new girls are and keep an eye out for them.

One of my DD's best friends travels to Kendrick from Cookham (along with her yr 12 sister). They get the train and don't seem to struggle. Her parents don't make it to many of the after school meets though.

Hi All

We live in Taplow/Burnham area within 12 minute walk to Taplow train station. Our DD will hopefully join Kendrick in 2015.

If it helps, we did a trial train journey last week from Taplow to Kendrick and back. There were 4-5 girls at the platform but not in red jumpers. We took 7.21 am train which was about 10 minutes late. There were 10-12 Kendrick girls already in our coach. We spoke to couple of them and they had got on from Burnham station. Few more red jumpers joined at Maidenhead and Twyford. So there were about 20+ in our coach and presumably similar no. in the second coach when we reached Reading. There were plenty of red jumpers scattered around station and on route to the school with no rush. Brisk walk from station to Kendrick took around 15 minutes.

We did the similar journey about 4 months ago but took 7.51 am train instead. We didn't see a single red jumper throughout the journey and reached school gate at 8.50 am (school start time is 8.45 am).

So it is going to be 7.21 am train for our DD with one of us escorting for first few days. Haven't explored bus option yet as not sure if it would be any better.

Thanks Tinkers. That explains why there were no red jumpers. :)

I remember the receptionist coming out and telling us that the gates closed at 8.45am. Just checked their website and the registration time is shown as 8.25 - 8.45 am.

Thank you Tinkers, Cano_dad, reading mum and mum.

Cano-dad, good idea to do a trial run in the morning to get a taste of the commute. Once I went to see Taplow station and I found it so lonely and isolated. Not a single person in sight but that was in the afternoon I must say. Maidenhead seems to be busy all day.
