Variables, equations with variables ?

Do equations with variables appear in 11 plus. Such as word problems where you have to create an equation, e.g. Y + 3 y = 14 and solve it ?

I guess the first question should be which 11plus are you looking at. But yes, this is the sort of question which could and does come up in some areas.
