I cannot say for all schools, but I know that many like to put the English first so that the markers can crack on with the huge amount of marking. Maths is easier to deal with in this regard.

Yes I had noticed in 4/4 exams it was English first but hadn't aligned that to the reason you state!

Would one hour make so much difference? After-all, how long would be maths parer?

Maths paper is 1 hour 15 mins. When you add the break time to it and imagine the entire English dept standing by ready to mark, it's quite a lot of man hours.....

That would be assuming that marking would start within minutes after the tests end. But you could be quite right, fairyelephant.

One hour can make a huge difference for the English if the school has to mark 400 plus papers between (say) 10 members of staff. Think about it - half would have to mark comprehension and the rest the writing task. For Maths, I assume only one team is needed.

The North London Consortium is a continue the story writing task which means the same marker would need to mark the comprehension and the writing task. DG
