How far would you move for a good state school?

Post by Liz3 »

Just a thought given this latest publication - http://www.tatler.com/news/articles/jan ... ry-schools .
How far would you move and how would you enrich your DCs lives with the c£20k saved each year?

a good prep school will have a budget of at least twice that per child
Are you sure? Do they actually publish the figure in that way so you can compare? Remember Prep schools have lots of additional costs that state schools don't. The state funding doesn't show the funding that is outside the 'per capita' amount e.g. covering rates, building etc.

The difference is nowhere near as clear cut as you think.

What is the amount of state funding per child out of interest?

There is a thread here on the subject of funding:

It appears that the national average is £5,588 per pupil.

Plan a, is for dd to get into tiffins. Plan b is move.

It will cost me the best part of £75k to move house and we are considering moving either 4 miles to a tiny catchment area for a great girls school. Or potentially 30 miles away to get into togs in Kent.

We are also considering indys, but with two kids indys will cost north of £150k

One can only move for a good state school provided there was no catchment rule for the same before putting the school in the CAF form.

Moving to another location often will cost a lot, and that might be well compensated by sending the DC to an indie where there might be overall development as some parents claim.

I believe we all will balance the pros and cons of moving against the local grammar school (if any) and indie and a far away better grammar school (in the league table) and then take a decision which we think will be best for the entire family in the long run.

The link in the OP's question was about primaries.

We moved - for other reasons - during primary. We prioritised a safe, reasonable primary school when choosing where to live. Later I discovered that it had a glowing entry in the Good Schools Guide. In London, that definitely came at a price. I should have paid more attention to secondary catchments (none  ) at the time though.

Pushydaddy, it wouldn't appear towards the end of an alphabetical list, would it? :-)

From north east london (zone 2) to south west london (zone 5)!
If you move further from the centre in London, a house move can save you money.
