So how come - with all its weeding out, selecting A level subjects for the ones who are allowed to stay on and no outsiders of possibly dubious quality allowed to join its sixth form - QE is only in 27th place overall for A level? Even the non-superselective,-external-candidates-welcomed-with-open-arms grammars our DC attend are only as low as the mid-40s .

Is it a really bad thing that according to those Telegraph tables, our local grammar is extremely high for GCSEs but not even top 100 for A levels?!? Wonder why their results vary so much between the 2 stages.... and will it even matter?

to be fair to QE you need to look at the points per entry(double lt click on the header to find out the order) you will find QE comes 11th, but since a lot of top performing schools do not make the top 100 cut based on "average points per student" the whole telegraph tables are a nonsence ( Eaton does not even figure in the tables!!)

the above link , the BBC top sixth forms is a much better measure or The Times Ranking(for subscription holders only) for the true pecking order, if that kind of thing floats your boat.

It depends on whether you are ranking by number of points per exam, or points per pupil. Is A*A*A* (900 points) better or worse than BBBC (930 points)? (Clue - one will get you into Cambridge, the other won't!)
HBS and QEB are the top 2 state schools if you measure points per exam (the top slots taken by the usual independents SPGC etc), but I imagine they're not trying to get their students to sit 5 A levels most of the time.

I wondered that too, but if you compare some of the other high achieving local schools, especially the indie girls' school nearby (which just manages the top 100 I think), then you'll see that the grammar school has a higher % of girls getting AAB with at least 2 facilitating subjects.

Like all league tables, you do have to look close at what they are measuring. The grammar school also takes in quite a number of girls from outside into the sixth form.

One of the grammars round here is so undersubscribed at sixth form that they have had to lower their entrance criteria. This school is hugely popular for eleven plus entry but by sixth form around 75% of students are trying to apply to study elsewhere - most of the really top students leave for other schools. For me as a parent of a year 6 child that would sound loud warning bells but people seem so delighted when a child gains a place they don't look at the sixth form end. Often a failing sixth form is the sign of a school in trouble, and conversely a growing one indicates a school on the 'up'
