There are only three types of mathematicians; those that can count and those that can't.

Merry Christmas to all

A good trick with the kids

How can you put ten horses into nine stables, with only one horse in each stable?

Method one

Draw nine stables and put the letters T-E-N-H-O-R-S-E-S into each stable.

Method two

Put two horses in the first stable
Put the third horse in the second stable
Put the fourth horse in the third stable
Put the fifth horse in the fourth stable
Put the sixth horse in the fifth stable
Put the seventh horse in the sixth stable
Put the eighth horse in the seventh stable
Put the ninth horse in the eighth stable
Go back to the first stable get the tenth horse and put that in the ninth stable.

Regards

Mike

Theory on the Hunting of Elephants (with acknowledgement to O'Byrne 2002)
MATHEMATICIANS hunt elephants by going to Africa, throwing out everything that is not an elephant, and catching one of whatever is left.
EXPERIENCED MATHEMATICIANS will attempt to prove the existence of at least one unique elephant before proceeding to step 1 as a subordinate exercise.
PROFESSORS OF MATHEMATICS will prove the existence of at least one unique elephant and then leave the detection and capture of an actual elephant as an exercise for their graduate students.
Have a great Christmas
