Maths Text books for Year 5 and Year 6

Post by here'sjohnny!!! »

I home school my DC and although they're doing phenomenally well I do find variation is key for maths text books. We use CGP books for Year 5 & 6 and the old NC level 5 for teaching the different maths areas as well as Target Maths Year 6 for exercises but I have found it hard to find other text books with exercises on each maths area. Target Maths is great as it has many exercises per area; fractions, percentages, etc. but I could do with an alternative, variety is key! We also have Bond books and Schofield and Sims for problem solving.

Any suggestions for a text book aimed at Year 5 & 6 broken down into exercises on each mathematical discipline?

I should add, DD will be taking the 11+ in September so we are gearing up for that...

The CPG books do cover the curriculum in much the same way as the Letts revision guide and workbook. You could try getting the Letts workbook for KS3. They also do a series called Mythical Maths, which my own daughter loved doing. They will give more practice for quite a few areas of the curriculum.

Online there is Hegartymaths, BBC bitesize and Khan academy. Though we tended not to use the first two, we used Khan academy to watch the videos where she was struggling with a concept, as his explanations are wonderfully clear and also if she wanted to do some computer maths for a bit of a change. Though it is American, maths is roughly the same the world over, but it will not teach to the English curriculum. One of the joys of home education is, however, that there is lots of time to cover subjects in different ways.

Please, I would strongly recommend avoiding khanacademy; it is not suitable for the UK. I have found numerous problems with it and we don't recommend it to our students.

There are lots of good websites with suitable material and old KS2 test papers.

No answers but ?Convinced and the levelopaedia are good.

Interactive material for particular 'gaps'.

We also used Peter Robson Maths 1 to 5 which are great. Not all of book 5 topics will be needed for 11+ - but if you and your DD have a passion for maths then you may as well cover that off as well.

You don't need to go to Amazon. They sell them here in the forum shop next day delivery and often have good deals on the pack.

I would also recommend the Y5 and Y6 of Maths Word problems sold in the forum shop. Small A5 book.

We did these in the car as you can read them out and work them out in your head. DG

Wasn't suggesting to buy it from Amazon. Just wanted to show a picture - google's top results was Amazon. Shall be more careful next time.
