My ds uses it to chat to his friends - prefers it to Skype as you can video chat 4 at a time. Hasn't done anything bad to his phone. Seems to be the chat app of choice among secondary age children around here.

Do you restrict usage at all or let him use it whenever he wants? DG

I don't restrict but I don't allow phones in bedrooms over night. I also have a policy with my dc that there are no restrictions (they are quite clear about what I find acceptable) but if they break my rules I'll stop useage. Ds is 12 (yr 7) and only allowed to "friend" people he knows - basically he oovoo's his school friends (he is at a mixed school - seems to be mainly girls he speaks to - I've heard him chatting and it's all pretty inane stuff).

I have all his passwords and reserve the right to check his phone at random.

The other things he uses are Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp - again with school friends).

I've been happy with ooovoo although sometimes wonder why, when you've spent 6 hours at school with people you then need to speak to them again as soon as you get in - but maybe this is a sign I'm getting old!

Eta sometimes they use it to chat through homework esp presentations etc

I alerted the police about this app.

Young girls at my school were asked to photograph themselves naked and post.

A man hacked into their online chat and exposed himself to them.

I'm sure we used to do this but the only difference was that the phone was attached to the wall in a freezing cold hallway!! Surely you remember lying all over the stairs at odd angles with people huffing past you all the time :D
