Imperial Measurements.
My DD is preparing for CEM and was struggling a little with weights and measured. So I fetched the Bond How to do 11+ maths and most of the section was on the comparison of metric and imperial measurements.
I was surprised, surely this isn't relevant now?

Re: Imperial Measurements.
It is in the new year 5 curriculum
Re: Imperial Measurements.
It's always been in the primary curriculum hasn't it?
Re: Imperial Measurements.
Yes, sorry..just meant that it is obviously still considered important.
(Also good for pointing out to the class how brilliantly easy base 10 is compared to what we had to do! )

I can remember learning to divide £ s d in what is now called Year 3 ...
Re: Imperial Measurements.
If only that were true. I think the curriculum expects children to be able to convert to/from imperial units which are "still in everyday use". I'd say that until we (as a nation) stop measuring distances in miles and speed in miles per hour, then our DCs should be able to use these units without issue.RedVelvet wrote:...surely this isn't relevant now?

And stop announcing new born baby weights in pounds!
Re: Imperial Measurements.
I wasn't taught any imperial measurements apart from one year when I had a maths teacher who refused point blank to teach us any of 'this metric nonsense'. I hated it at the time but comes in very useful now, especially when we sometimes work with clients who insist on imperial measurements, or looking at old physical data that is only in weird units.
Degrees Twaddle or acres-foot/day anyone? (And yes they are both real)

Re: Imperial Measurements.
Hi all,
Imperial Measurements are no longer needed at GCSE from Summer 2017. So the current year 10s will be the last cohort to learn this.
best regards...
