Level 6 maths questions

Post by Azure »

My dc been given some level 6 maths questions for homework. He is not bad but some confuse both of us.

1.... Write 4 numbers that have a mean of 4 and a range of 4.

2..... A dragon lived in a cave. The dragon doubled in size every day. After 20 days the dragon filled the cave. After how many days did the dragon half-fill the cave.

Advice on how to do these questions PlEASE

1) Try some numbers - do you know what mean and range are?

Hint: The four numbers will need to add to 16 (mean = 16/4 = 4) and highest - lowest = 4 (range)

2) How big was the dragon the previous day if it now fills the cave?

Sorry I still not understand. Why does answer must be 16. Range between 16 and 4 is not 4

We don't know how big dragon was yesterday if he today fills the cave. That is our big problem.

We didn't before feel stupid. Dc pass 11+ very well. But now you make me panic :(

1) I said the four numbers have to ADD to 16 .... and the biggest - smallest = 4

so 1,5,5,5 would work - find another answer

2) Think - if the cave is 50 m^3 (for example) - what was dragon yesterday? How much of the cave is that?

1) The question tells us the mean is 4 ... so for 4 numbers the total has to be 16 as mean = total of numbers/numbers

2) What is the inverse (opposite) of doubling?

 I understand cave question :D   thank you for patients.

So is it square numbers? If there is 5 numbers would mean have to be 5 and all 5numbers add to 25?

No problem.

1) No, it depends on the mean and how many numbers there are. If three numbers have a mean of 8 then the three numbers add to 24 (mean = total/3 = 8 so total =3 x 8 )
