GL Paper 11C question 50

Post by Franticdad »

Hi all Frantic dad here

My D/S came up against this question in the above paper, hoping someone out there can offer some advice and a method to solve this:

Ben and Emma each start to grow a plant on he same day. After one week both plants are 5 cm tall. During the next three weeks Ben's plant grows f centimetres per week and Emma's grows g centimetres per week. Emma's plant is taller. When the plants are 4 weeks old how much taller is Emma's plant than Ben's, in centimetres?

kind regards frantic dad

What about using numbers first? Try f= 2 and g = 5 [g has to be biggerthan f as we're told Emma's plant is taller] and see how tall the plants would be after two weeks, three weeks then four weeks ... then repeat with letters.

Gave it to my DD... this is what she came up with

Given : 1st week - E = 5cm B = 5cm

E's plant grows 3g in 3 weeks
~ her plant will be (5cm + 3g) cm tall in 4 weeks

B's plant grows 3f in 3 weeks
~ his plant will be (5cm + 3f)cm tall in 4 weeks

(5cm +3g)cm > (5cm +3f)cm

after 4 weeks
E = 3g + 5
B = 3f + 5

E-B = 3g + 5 - (3f + 5)
= 3g + 5 - 3f - 5
= 3 (g - f) cm

Hope this helps :)

Thanks

Hi,

As far as I remember this was a multiple choice question and 4 answers were given. One of the answers was the one solved.

Thanks
Jas
