Content of second stage
Hello All,
Can someone please explain the details of second stage English paper. Is it just standard format paper along with a piece of writing???
Is the writing marked at all or only used for tie breaks??? Feeling confused???
Thanks
Jas

Don't know whether you are doing the boys or girls but here goes with what I know.
It's all marked. I think the English may well be the decider.
In my son's year at Wilson's we were told 50 boys got 100% in the maths. The rest who got places weren't far behind that apparently.
The Wilson's English is notoriously tricky. They have in the past had an extended piece of writing. One year it was a newspaper report involving direct and indirect speech.
Last year Wally girls was several comprehensions requiring answers that were paragraphs.
Nonsuch in contrast had no comprehension. The whole time allocated to English was to write an essay entitled playtime in the spring.
Wishing you all the best.

For the boys it is writing, and it is basically the paper which decides whether you pass or not. Have a look at the SET FAQs, as I think that the SET result counts for very little towards the overall ranking.

You will find SET FAQs in Sutton grammar schools admission pages.
