You have too much time on your hands! I wouldn't know where to start...! I know I bought lots of books/practice papers that we never got around to using

You've done remarkably well keeping your costs down! We've spent several hundred pounds on books alone, never mind the external tuition (11+ prep course) costs...

On seeing your post it made me wonder about how much we have spent, so here's our breakdown which I didn't think was too bad!:

K*** 2 books and Flashcards £30.00

Travel to K*** for Mock Tests £20.00
Printer Ink £40.00
Archery Set for End of Test Treat £150.91

GRAND TOTAL = £1,156.35

DD2 took 11+ last year.

Costs:
CGP books £80.00
Flash cards £30.00 - never used and passed them on to friend!
Treats for trying hard £100.00

Total £210.00

Having said that she only scored 213 and scraped in off wait list, so maybe could have done more!

DS1 took 11+ last year.

Costs:

NIL

Wasn't that clued up on 11+ journey so decided to home tutor 6 months before test (only discovered this forum after getting results). Only used online resources and tests which I didn't pay for. I suppose you could add £10.00 for the use of Ink.

Having said that he only scored 206 and scraped in off the waiting list.

DS2 is taking test next year and we are taking a completely different approach this time round!

Looking back I don't think I would have wanted to risk not doing the tutoring, but I would not have started till October of year 5, rather than end of year 4. That said it comes down to how far behind on reading and maths they are, so realistic initial assessment is important.

£52 on vocabulary flash cards - prize plonker, for buying them really. With benefit of hindsight if you have a spare £52 go out and buy as many relevant books on the buy 1 get one half price deals, David Walliams, Michael Morpurgo, Harry Potter etc.

On the marginal cost per SD point, I wondered whether if there was enough data posted whether a rough analysis using a correlation co-efficient could be done. Donkeys years since I have done that in anger, but would be fascinating to plot. There must be an optimal sweet point where the returns from extra time / cash diminish massively

We spent £35 a week on 1 hour tutoring a week for 40 weeks. Plus £50 for the tutor assessment and £25 for past papers.

Total = £1475.

Plus about £50 on post-exam treats!

PP - It's always hard to find a happy medium with tutoring and judge what's too little or too much.

Our tutor ran several literacy clubs and each club is really worth the time spent. Initially I cherry picked a few for my son and left others. Then I found that 30 odd kids snapped those clubs in no time at all. The only option I was left with was to call up the tutor and request a place for my son on the ones I missed, because as a parent I didn't want him to miss out on what the others had. It's a difficult one
