TES recently ran a study, too.

With ds1, who is now in 6th form, unfortunately both he and his friends are quite major gamers...mainly strategy games. But I mean...hours a day, every day.
He asked me the other day (not horribly) why I was 'staring' at him and I realised that because I hardly ever see him, I was getting a good look at him!!
I'm not happy at all with it, and it takes up a huge amount of their time and their lives

From those 'gamer' boys in his (usually virtual) friendship circle, I think the lowest score at GCSE was about 7A* and 3A.
Quite a few scored 10A*.
So unfortunately my insistence that it is harming their grades is not really being taken seriously now
Ds1 also believes that it helps his History

UM,this cohort of gamers are not the problem, this group of very intelligent geeks probably do benefit from strategic gaming most of them could probably programme and code in multiple computer languages, the problem arises with less naturally bright children particularly those young people with other emotional stresses that use gaming as an escape, for them hours of gaming becomes an emotional crutch and addiction(because that's what it is) is the real danger.

To me it is a problem.

I'm not sure any university will look on gaming as a particularly useful hobby
We can only see what happens at A level - there are only so many hours in the day and unfortunately these strategy games really eat them up.
