SWGS & RGS experiences

Post by Awesomeanshi »

Congrats to all those DCs who qualified and commiserations to those who weren't so lucky.

Would really appreciate if someone could share their experiences to help decide SWBGS and RGS? Tx

Do you mean RGS in High Wycombe, or Reading Grammar School?

I meant Royal Grammar School here, thanks for the overwhelming responses.............yes I have also been asking about Reading Boys....lucky me, my DS has scored well in both, so bit confused as we want the best for him. Thanks for sharing :)....not sure we are in catchment for SWGS but should be close as we live in Wycombe.

Ok, if you are ln wycombe and plan to stay living in wycombe then rgs or John hampden are both superb grammar schools, the difference which is widely locally known is rugby or football. Rgs is very strict, jh less strict but more homework (they have to make their boys life a little uncomfortable somewhere along the line). They are both in top 100 on results league tables if that's your thing. Rgs probably a bit more up there for music, jh a lot more up there for art, rgs has latin as a language choice or classics but you have to keep French to gcse. Jh you can drop French and select two different mfl. Rgs has a little in house swimming pool which the boy seems to enjoy...except for the day of the floating poo!!!! Jh has its famous 3d printers. Both use ipads for learning.
Borlase is kitty mum's department, but is significant difference is its mixed, specialises in dance, hockey and rowing, again academically superb.

For my opinion if you can avoid handy cross roundabout in the morning then do so, the only bad thing I have to say about jh is its location on marlow hill is a chore for access, the same would apply to borlase from high Wycombe.

Reading!!!!! Horrible commute.

I have one child at SWBGS and another will go in September.

I love the school and it is very much our first choice (we are also catchment for the Wycombe single sex schools).

The school is small - 120 a year in yr 7 & 8 increasing by another class from year 9 onwards.

The curriculum is different in some respects from RGS - the compulsory subjects in year 7 are English, maths, history, geography, French, tech, computing, dance, drama, pe, games. In year 8 they take a second language (school will allocate) either German or Spanish. Hockey and rowing are very big.

I love it but as does my ds. I would say it's the opposite in many ways to RGS so your best bet would be to visit if you haven't already.

Essentially they will both provide you with a superb education so I would say it's a question of deciding which is the best fit / easiest journey.

Eta they don't use iPads but chrome books. They are also building a big swanky 6th form centre at the moment.

Eta when I say it's the opposite to RGS I mean that in a positive way - they are both excellent schools but v different.
