Buckinghamshire Review Questions

Post by mummail »

Hi I'm new here, although I've lurked for a while and have found the advice really helpful. I've read the advice about reviews and appeals for Buckinghamshire, but I have some specific questions, which I'm hoping someone can help me with.

My DS hasn't reached the qualifying mark and is a bit further away than is comfortable.

On the plus side his Headteacher has expressed shock that he didn't qualify and is prepared to support him to the fullest extent. He was given a 1.1 recommendation and it seems that all the others 1.1s at his school qualified plus a good number of others, which I gather is a good sign?

My question is whether it is advisable to mention in the review pack his siblings' scores and whether that would carry any weight. I hope it's okay to put the reason for wanting to, in a message to the Appeals box, as we're fairly easily identifiable.

Also what do we put for predicted levels, as SATs have disappeared? He did get a full set of level 3's at KS1 and was moving steadily towards 5's when they were last issued.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

No, his siblings scores aren't relevant - focus on evidence for him e.g. levels, any CATs etc

It sounds encouraging that the school are very supportive and that others qualified with that sort of recommendation.

Hi mummail, and welcome!

Thank you for the message to the AppealsBox.

As Guest55 says, his siblings' scores aren't relevant, although I am sending you a PM about one point.

The extenuating circumstances you mention in your message may be helpful if the Head can confirm them.

For SATs, I am assuming that the school will be able to provide teacher-assessed levels?

Thank you Guest55. His school are being very supportive.

I don't think I've ever seen CAT scores. Is that something all schools have?

His last school report didn't have predicted SAT levels but a different system showing the level they were working at in relation to year 5 expectations. I feel like the goalposts have moved.

You should be looking at an assessment from Year 5 something like 'Year 5 exceeding' - although all schools will have different ways of recording attainment now.

Hello I have a question regarding Buckinghamshire review/appeals that I seem to be getting different answers to in real life so thought someone on the forum could help!

Someone told me today that if you do a review and it is for whatever reason unsuccessful that you can not appeal later on should you not get a placement.

Is that true?

Thanks!

Hello, PrincessPrabz

You have your own thread on Appeals - please post your question there.

But you really ought to read the Q&As first of all.

Thank you Guest55, I've found the assessment levels from year 5, which I think look okay. It's not as easy to assess them with an unbiased eye as it was with SATs levels.

If, as you say, schools have different ways of recording attainment now, I wonder how much emphasis or reliance a review board will place on them.

I think that's a very good question! I've no idea how KS2 predictions will be compared between schools now.

I suspect that the strength of support in the Headteacher's language in what they write will be even more important.
