Wolverhampton Girls High - New Year 7
Got the enrolment pack today. Not hanging about, they want the forms back by 18/3.
Actually might work out as a chance to have one final look at the school and size it up. There won't be any of the caution surrounding other such events as they know you have a place. Says scratching his chin. On the other hand they might be in sales mode???
Might do it actually cos the KEVIHS one are on the evening. Lots and lots of paper work including bio id's to return.
Probably better to stall for a bit
No chocolate bar included from Trudi

So much to think about. I wouldn't jump in a buy all the uniform from the school shop. Looks a little dear, from the price list. Unless it is a monopoly in which case, que sera sera!!
Kit list, Fx Calculators etc doesn't look too demanding. Might get her a very nice fountain pen. She has wonderfully neat handwriting. Way better than mine, sounds like they like that.
Music so hopefully she can do joint tuition, that looks a bit more tolerable at £275 rather than the one to one tuition.
We already have several dictionaries, but I would definitely invest in a collins grammar dictionary.
School trips / residential + optional contributions to about three different things, including parent guild and school dinners. mmmmmmh!
Suddenly - Don't know why, but I think year 7 is where it gets a bit dearer for school, generally.

Have they said what the languages are this year ? Japanese and French maybe and dictionaries required ?Petitpois wrote:So much to think about. Agree re the rucksacks! We're on bag number 4! The £28 Adidas one was taken back for a refund last week when it lasted less than 2 months. They do learn to leave books in their lockers eventually though, instead of carting everything about.
PS At KEHS the compulsory trips are included in the fees, except the residential which was only £90.

French and Spanish and it looks like German and Russian later. Presumably Russian later so they get their head round the first three.
They said hang fire on the Russian books as they will advise later.
We have got away with rubbishy rucksack £10-20 territory, but I think a £50-ish well built thing is going to be required.
Suddenly all very very real when you have the paperwork in front on you.
The homework policy is for real, I think I could sum it up in a few words. No shirkers, only workers!
BTW that probably means a trip to IKEA or similar for a proper study table too!!

Re: Wolverhampton Girls High - New Year 7
I bought my eldest son's rucksack in Year 7 from Costco and despite years of heavy carrying, it's still very good now in 6th form!
I'd recommend them. Ds2 had one too but is more style-conscious and has brought himself a few others along the way too
DD has one from Land's End with her own name embroidered on it (she has a tendency to lose things ) and that's been good, too, although it's a light colour so does get filthy.
The 'fashion' among girls to bring a shoulder bag/handbag style thing to school is a worrying one - the books and equipment can be very heavy and to protect your daughter's back as she is growing, please buy her a back-pack style bag with two padded shoulder straps.

Early days really. I think I am a bit taken aback. This might sound mad after 18 months of tuition and her passing three separate exams, but I suddenly (now its real), it is a bit like wooooh!! We have never transitioned them to high school. You can have your opinion on this or that school, but what do you know really, springs to mind???quasimodo wrote:You are not thinking............................about going in your Rover 420 up and down the Wolverhampton Road ? I Am suddenly glad that there is a year between them. I would not like having to prep DD2 for the exam this year and get her setteled wherever she goes. Whatever happens she will have to step up to the plate more.
BTW - I must confess a small white lie. There is no Rover 420, although I did have one years ago around 2001. I love my cruise control too much!!!

There is a lot to be said for a 'proper' school rucksack. DS carts around a tonne of books in his bag, mistreats it on a regular basis and it is still going strong after 3.5 years (although looking a bit worse for wear) - for the initial outlay of just under £30! Most importantly, he does not complain of back or shoulder pains. It may not be quite as 'cool' looking as a sports branded one, but it has lots of pockets, decent, properly shaped shoulder straps and a padded back.crazycrofter wrote:Agree re the rucksacks! I asked our school shop where they get them from and they said they were made by Marathon, who apparently specialise in school bags. I took the liberty of sending to both of you a link showing exactly the same school rucksack as DS uses (but without a school logo), in case it may be useful. I promise I have no vested interests in the company who make them.
It felt like I hit rock bottom; suddenly, there was knocking from beneath... (anon.)

It was really exciting to come home and find our welcome pack from WGHS . I have to admit it looks very impressive and better than the private school packs we have had locally. yes they certainly look like they mean business !
