Tution Centres

If we are not allowed to name tutors or tuition centres, then how does one decide which one to choose? Is there another way forum where this can be discussed? They all cost an enormous amount of money and I would like to choose one from a personal recommendation.

Please do PM me if you can recommend a tutor or a centre that operates at the weekend as we can't attend any week day sessions.

I guess you could ask the tutor themselves for a reference? You can usually ask for a trial period. I'm aware that you're not local to the area which makes it trickier - usually people just ask those at their school who have been successful.

Thanks I have asked the tutors. They both have high success rates but both want me to pay up deposit upfront. I'd loath to part with a large sum of money (in excess of £350) without a reference or a recommendation.

Are they not willing to provide a reference then? That is unusual. Equally so are such large deposits in my experience.

I'm not sure that a recommendation from someone that you've never met on an internet forum would help you. It all depends on how much work there is to be done, and how the relationship between the tutor and your child goes.

I have requested references so I'll see what I get back from them.

One tuition centre will provide a free session & will test him to see what standards he is at. The other one, will not test him or provide a free session yet I am expected to part with a huge sum of money to secure his place

As for the recommendations, I was hoping for people to PM with their tutor & why they would recommend them etc. I was also hoping that one or to names keep cropping up so I know that its a genuine recommendation.

I guess it is worth pointing out that for 1 to 1 tuition most tutors will have a maximum of 20 clients per academic year, so you may not see those names coming up multiple times. I would feel that I would be invading a tutors privacy if I gave out their details to anonymous strangers. But the larger tuition centres are a different beast I guess.

But how would one get details of a private tutor if they can't share it? At most it's a mobile number, where's the harm in that?

Because it invades the tutor's privacy. For example, I don't know you from Adam. You could be extremely hard work, and the type of parent I wouldn't want to inflict on a tutor. The are some incredibly unreasonable parents out there.

That said, ime good tutors are booked up a long way in advance. our youngest son's tutor who takes just 10 pupils a year was fully booked for that year group by the time he started year 3 (she did have a 100% pass rate with that cohort).

But I may be unusually cautious - just explaining why I don't tend to give out recommendations on here. Others may take a different view.
