Echoing everyone else really; the SATS my DD took last year where much, much harder than the ones my DS took 3 years previously. She hates reading, her spelling is dreadful and she (still) writes letters and numbers the wrong way around - basically she takes after me! She was given a 'low risk' of dyslexia when the school had her tested ...

Like you, I was really worried about her English SATS - she's fine with SPAG, loves a rule! However, she got exceeding in all areas last summer and we were very proud of her. Her writing wasn't at greater depth, but that was fine and expected given her spelling. She is now flying at secondary school and has a ridiculously high reading age!

So please don't worry about the SATS. Her place at the grammar will not be affected by the results. As Yoyo says, I'd be more concerned that the school is using the old NC levels ...

To JamesDean,
What is "low risk" dyslexia?
Thanks

It is the wording of the DST (British Physcological Society's Dyslexia Screening Test. The results are presented as stages of "at risk".

It was many years ago, but from memory the score is scaled from 'no risk' to 'high risk'. DD's score was within the 'low risk' band. The Ed Psych then did another big test on her, which revealed her strengths and (one) weakness - reading. The school then put in multiple interventions to work on this and her confidence, and she herself worked very hard through KS2. Like I said, we were very proud of her SATs results :D

MidYis isn't used to diagnose learning difficulties:

We trialled it many years ago but found it gave targets that were too low.

As others said last year's SATs were difficult, especially the Reading. There were cases of children who passed 11+ with high standardised scores coming out as "not secondary ready!"
