Q&As

Post by Etienne »

Thanks, Patricia. As I've just been writing in another thread, in a later version we'd like to make some improvements, e.g. to break the Q&As down into sections (Before the Appeal, Compiling the Evidence, The Day of the Appeal, Ombudsman ...) to make them easier to negotiate.

Love you too. :D

Hi Etienne,

I avidly read all of your posts on appeals in case I needed the knowledge on 1 March. Thankfully I didn't. I do want to say that having ploughed through the Special Needs system for years I know exactly how confusing, misleading, and totally mind boggling  the Education system as a whole is. Just when help is most needed, officials seem to go to ground. Those supposedly in a position to help are often misinformed themselves and little or no help. In contrast, your advice is impartial, totally professional, helpful and informed.

Which brings me to the point I want to make. Etienne, it must be said you are a rarity in this world. Your willingness to devote so much of that most precious commodity, time, to this forum marks you out as truly wonderful.

Thank you

Wow Etienne that is just AMAZING :D :D :D :!:

I can't believe how much work you've put into that in such a short space of time. It is going to be such a help to so many people in the future, and I really think that you've plugged the only known gap in the resources of this site. I hope in the long run it saves you some work in answering so many appeal posts on the Bucks forum.

Thank you for your huge dedication to the site.

Thankyou Etienne. This new easily accessible section will help take away the feeling of walking into the mystery of the unknown (appeals).

Appeals

Post by Jan »

Hello Etienne,

Just read your very interesting posting on questions for appeals and would just like some help with our appeal.

We are going to take a barrister who specialises in educational law with us as our son who is dyslexic and missed passing by 2 marks but the LEA refused him any reasonable adjustments (even though he gets this in all other exams ) and there was a disruption in the exam that our headmaster failed to mention in his first appeal.

The school our son has been allocated only offers single award science and the grammar school we are appealing to offers all 3 sciences to GCSE and as our son in on the gifted and talented register for science and attends a science club for gifted and talented children, the teacher has written a letter of support for him.( he also wants to be a scientist when he leaves school).

My questions are should we fight our appeal on all these points or just focus on the fact that he was discriminated against?

Should we let the barrister do all the talking or should I contribute to?

Also do you think this case has a chance of winning.

Thank you for you time!

Regards,
Jan

Thanks so much, Patricia, HP, Sally-Anne, Bewildered, and others, for your very kind words. Much appreciated.

Could I just draw everyone's attention to the "disclaimer" at the start of the Q&As? While I have no reason to think that my opinions are other than mainstream, current and future panel members might take a different view.

None the less, I hope it helps to see things from the perspective of one person who's had some experience of the system.

Accidentally found this thread and thought id resurrect it. We truly do love Etienne, and co.

With two soon to be at Gloucestershire grammars i can safely say I don't think it would have happened without this forum. Through my darkest times when I thought about jacking in the 11+ cos my DCs were distressed at having to do any extra work or stressed by the thought of something they didn't even really understand, ie what on earth a grammar school actually is, without the forum to turn to I might not have persuaded my two to give it a go.

Thanks all

PS. I REALLY hate effusiveness so you know I mean it
