Off memory, close to 4,000 (boys and girls).

The Sutton admissions leaflet says that a total of 4,729 children sat in 2016, made up of both boys and girls.
Of those, 995 girls were invited back for the second state test for Nonsuch/Wallington Girls;
845 boys sat the second stage test for Wilsons (566 passed);
891 boys sate the second stage test for Sutton Grammar School (746 passed).
I don't know how many girls passed for Nonsuch/Wally Girls, or how many passed Wallington Boys (they don't have a second stage test at Wally Boys).

Wow, so the majority of girls who sit the second stage do actually qualify?

The schools need to fill all the available places.

Yes it is fair to say that if you pass the SET then statistically speaking you have a good chance of passing the 2nd stage test. However, it is worth remembering that passing the second stage test is not in itself enough to be offered a place, just to be considered and placed in rank order. Given that the schools need to fill their places they pass significantly more students than they will offer places to.
Good luck for next week.

Last year Sutton Grammar passed close to everyone who took the second stage. So when it came to offer day on the 1st March, I was shocked to find that my DS was the only one going there from his school. It really does give false hope as I found out when I spoke to a few parents after offers day. Good luck all for this coming Tuesday.

Yes, that must be tough.
The boys schools in Sutton don't give test results to successful candidates, they are just told that they passed and are now qualified to name the school on the CAF. This means that you don't really have any idea until offer day whether or not you'll get a place.
I think the girls schools do give scores.
