Progress 8 scores - Sutton/Kingston schools

Post by 2outof3 »

This is not relevant for me anymore, but I thought it might be useful for those of you still looking at schools to see the comparative (provisional) progress 8 scores that have just been released.

And before someone states the obvious, like all statistics these scores are not perfect and they should only form one part of the picture when comparing schools........

Progress 8 scores show how much progress pupils make between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4 compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2. A score above zero means pupils made more progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

Schools will get an attainment 8 score based on how well pupils have performed in up to 8 qualifications which include English, maths 3 Eng Bacc qualifications and 3 other additional approved qualifications.

I've thrown in a couple of non-selective schools (in brackets) for comparison.

Make of it what you will

Progress 8

Tiffin Girls (1.22)
Nonsuch High (1.15)
Wallington High (1.04)
Wallington County (0.97)
Wilson's (0.9)
(Holy Cross 0.85)
Tiffin School 0.79
(Coombe Girls 0.63)
Sutton Grammar (0.51)
(Hollyfield School 0.28)

Attainment 8

Tiffin Girls (82.9)
Wilsons (79.4)
Nonsuch (78.8 )
Tiffin Boys (76.6)
Sutton Grammar (75)
Wallington High (75)
Wallington County (74)
(Holy Cross 57.5)
(Coombe Girls 55.9)
(Hollyfield 51.5)

Am I correct in thinking if the progress 8 score is 1 that equates to one grade at GCSE per subject higher than would have been predicted from the KS2 data?

These values are given within confidence intervals so please lok at that - the list is less clear cut. You also need to know how it is calculated as one student who is absent affects the score.

These are also based on provisional results ie before changes to grades.
