Advice - Mathematics

I’ve always had in mind that my oldest DD would study Medicine (she’s in Year 10). I think it’s secretly because I’ve always wanted to be a doctor (I’m a pharmacist).

My DD today however, has told me she wants to do something related to Mathematics . The thing is I don’t know much about this area as I had been focused on Medicine. I’ve told her I will support whatever decision she makes as truly she’s very good at Maths, constantly scoring Level 9.

Please does anyone know or have any advice for me on degrees she could consider. I know it is early but I want us to work towards achieving her dream.

Sounds like a maths degree would be a good start.

However the engineer in me would like to suggest that maybe she has a look at engineering as well. Still quite a numerate subject and maybe one she hasn't considered.

Fabulous that your daughter knows her own mind and has her own academic interests.

I am sure that in conjunction with the internet and her school tutors she can probably work out for herself what to study after school. She is currently only 14 and has a way to go yet. I don't think you as her mother need to do anything other than, as you say, to support and encourage her. She could well change her mind again yet - lots of wonderful opportunities out there for her to explore! It is her dream and not yours remember, and people are usually pretty good at following their own dreams without their mother's direct assistance.

A good Mathematics degree course will usually ask for both Maths and F Maths A levels.

Does she take part in UKMT challenges? Has she read around the subject at all? Books by Rob Eastaway are a good starting point:

The content of a Maths degree varies enormously between different unis. Some are mainly 'pure' and some include a lot of applied modules.
Her maths teacher would be a good person to talk to -

By the time it comes to choosing A levels she might want to have an idea which way she is going with the maths in order to choose the accompanying subjects eg physics or economics.

Econometrics might be another area for her to look at.
Theoretical physics might be of interest.

But I agree that she's best left to investigate for herself - very easy to do these days!
