Many congratulations.

I'm biased - my DS started at Sutton GS last month - but it's a great school. Is it your first choice?

Yes for Sutton here too! Is Wilsons out yet?
Congrats to all children who sat, very commendable!

Oops.....hand was shaking.
two years back....913 candidates sat the second stage test and 551 met the standard, this year 995 sat and 809 met the standard.

How come many more met the standard this year? and obviously this means tougher competition for a placement offer at Sutton Grammar!

Congratulations to all children who sat and passed. My DS cleared this. Now waiting for Wilson - and then have to decide CAF options.

Hard luck to those who were not able to get through - sure they would have cracked others. Many congratulations for attempting these exams.

This is what was in the email from Sutton last year about the number of boys who passed: "One unfortunate aspect of open testing at an early date is that there are lots of boys who use the tests as practice for selective schools in their own area. This school used to hold its second test in November and last year was the first time our second stage was in early October. Significant numbers took the second stage who lived in places that cannot reasonably access the school without moving and virtually none of these boys came to the school in September. We can see a similar pattern in the post codes of applicants this year and so although we have passed more boys this year we think that there will be a close balance between the total number of selective places for boys who live within reasonable travelling distance and the numbers who have met the selective standard."

I think that two years ago, when only 551 were passed, Sutton found itself very close to not having enough qualified boys to fill the PAN. Last year 746 boys were passed for Sutton but it sounds like they might have found that slightly too few again, so have increased it a little this year.

Good luck.

I assume you understand that you won't find out whether your son is actually offered a place until March 2018?

email extract :
The Sutton Grammar School Admissions Committee has now met and considered the results of the shared second stage test. I am delighted to inform you that [DS name] has met the required standard and will be included in our rank order of candidates to be considered for a place at Sutton Grammar School if the school is named on the Common Application Form.

995 candidates sat the second stage test and 809 met the required standard. For candidates who met the required standard, no information regarding their marks will be given to parents. Please note that, due to over-subscription, meeting the required standard does not guarantee an offer of a place at our school.

If you would like your son to be considered for a place, you must name Sutton Grammar School on your Common Application Form. Offers for Sutton Grammar School depend not only upon this result but upon the overall number of boys who met the required standard and the preferences that parents express on their Common Application Form. It is important that you list schools on your Common Application Form in your true preference order. The deadline for submitting the Common Application Form to your local authority is 31 October 2017.

Your local authority will make an offer of a school place for [DS name] on National Offer Day, 1 March 2018. If [DS name] is offered a place at Sutton Grammar School, we will be in touch with you again at that time. If you have applied for a place here and are not offered one, your son's name will automatically be on our waiting list if he has not received an offer of a place at a higher preference school.

This notification relates to the outcome of the testing process for Sutton Grammar School only. You will receive a separate notification from Wilson's School regarding the outcome of the tests for that school.

If you have any queries, please contact the Registrar at Sutton Grammar School who will be happy to help you.

Yours sincerely

As the last poster said, many congratulations to those who made and commiserations to those who didn't! It's all a bit much really for kids who are just 10 or 11!.

Is it reasonable to think that boys who made it through the exam for Wilson's with its somewhat higher threshold, probably have a decent chance of at least getting an SGS place, or is logic failing me here?

SGS has places for local children, that would complicate the calculations. Those who passed Wilson's and live in SGS local area, would be in my opinion have good chance of getting SGS if not Wilson's.

It's also complicated by the fact that the schools use different ratios between the SET and second stage test - Wilsons is 20% SET and 80% second stage, whereas Sutton is 40% SET and 60% second stage. This means that if a child did really well in the SET but was slightly weaker in both second stage tests, they would have a higher score for Sutton than Wilsons, notwithstanding that Wilsons passed fewer boys.

Every year there are children who pass different combinations of exams and are offered places at some schools but not others. It's difficult to second-guess - the best advice is to put the schools in the order that you genuinely prefer.
