Question regarding speed

Post by MCLC »

DD worked out the answer to the following question:

ABC 148
ABC 148
+ABC 148
BBB 444

It took her longer than I think she'll have in the exam and I was wondering if someone can give me an idea on how to encourage her to eliminate certain numbers instantly?

I'd look out more of these so she can practice them.

In the 100s column you have A, A and A - A has got to be 3 or less as there's no carry. So this has implications on B ...

Carry on like this eliminating digits.

Actually getting stuck is the key to learning maths - too many tutors and teachers jump in immediately. She needs to learn strategies for 'unsticking' herself.

Carry on :D

Hopefully you can see why A can't be 3 ... then carry on.
