How many GCSE's do student sit in your school?

Post by 2Girlsmum »

St Michael's have decided to drop the number of GCSE subjects taken from 11 to 10 this September. I know that Latymer already only study10 subjects, and a friend at Highgate Wood School told me that they study for 9 there. The decision was made after a record number of current Y11 students dropped a subject to focus on their best/most important ones, but also out of concern that 11 was putting too much stress on students to do well in the more challenging new exams.

My DD’s school - Kendrick in Reading - sits 11. A very small number of students is allowed to drop to 10 after consultations.

Used to be 11, now I think with new specs it has dropped to 10, with the option to do 9. Universities interested in top 8. No point in any more than 9 or 10 imho.

11 here; but some are allowed to do 10. Believe same at Tiffin Girls.

With new 9 to 1 specs, seems that 9 should be the norm.

Between 9 and 11 depending on whether the kids study double or triple science and if they take Further Maths.

May I just say it is pointless taking FM at gcse unless your child wants to do a STEM subject at uni, better to concentrate revision time on the others.

I do not recommend Further Maths GCSE .... focus on maths and the rest.

Further Maths is not a choice. If you are in certain sets you do it. Also Further Maths GCSE is required if you want to take Further Maths at A Level. The only exception is if you join the sixth form from another school where it is not offered and then you have to provide evidence that you are a suitable candidate!

At DAO it's currently 11 (10 if doing double science).
From the current year 9 it will be 10 (9).
I know some local comprehensives that are continuing with 11 even including those doing double science. This seems an awful lot to me (and possibly counter-productive).
