Rwview missed can we Appeal?

Post by Rsinsinwar »

Son missed allocation by few marks , we live next doors to GS, the allocated GS not outstanding.

Clearly we didn’t know about review and missed doing anything about it. I have some backing from the head teacher for the appeal.

HT believes DS has a poor case because he is too good and highly able with no SEN. But he doesn’t know the extenuating circumstances the family was in...Son was new in the country and took a while to adjust to new school, class and country.......Father went thru multiple surgeries 9 over a period of 1.5 yrs leading upto 11+.

I could send the details of appeal, any suggestions and help much appreciated.

Is this Bucks? Head over to the Bucks section and read Eienne's post: How to appeal for a Bucks GS place 2018 on this link:

It’s Kent , DS offered 3rd choice Grammar school. We didn’t know there is a review process....So waited till March Allocation.....we have strong academic evidence of accelerated learning and some extenuating circumstances....some long term and one recent enough to cause trouble to DS at the exam.

Welcome to Appeals! :)

In Kent it's the headteacher who applies for a review, not the parent.

All you need to know about appealing can be found here.

Thanks,

Oh ok.My DS goes to another county for primary school. I have read through all the standard material for appeal. Prepared the first draft. Your material was very useful to draft. Can you help in reviewing and sharpening our case?

Sorry - unfortunately there isn't normally enough time to study everyone's case in detail. Happy to try and answer any questions on here.

Is your allocated grammar school also in Kent?

Yes, allocated GS in Kent. I didn’t understand if we need to submit a a brief of 1 page application from self and HT and evidences to follow the way to go? Or as many as possible evidences to be submitted by 28th March?

It depends whether you are ready to submit your full case this month.
It is entirely up to you.

Presumably your son met the minimum qualifying score for Kent, otherwise you wouldn't have been allocated a Kent grammar school. (This means there would have been no point in a review, because a review would only have looked at the issue of qualification.)

Why were you refused a place at your preferred grammar school, if qualified?
Was the score not high enough?
Or was it because you live too far away?

In that case, you could certainly argue that, although he met the minimum qualifying standard, there is evidence to show that he ought to have scored even more highly than he did.
See B1 part (b):
http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeal ... ication#b1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In addition, you must give good reasons for wanting a place at this particular school (rather than negative points about the allocated school):
http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeal ... -school#c2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This is very important.

To sum up, there should be three parts to your case:
    • 1. Academic evidence that he is even more able than his score might suggest.
      2. Reasons why he underperformed on the day of the test.
      3. Reasons for wanting or needing a place at this particular school.
Ideally all three parts would be equally compelling.
Try and make them of approximately equal length (although the evidence can be additional).
The case would look very 'unbalanced' if you were to write a whole page about academic ability and extenuating circumstances, but just a sentence or two about reasons for wanting a place.
