Transport/commute to CRGS

Post by Cherrytree »

DS has offer from CRGS for September 2018. Does anybody know of current students travelling from Hatfield Heath or Bishop's Stortford direction? What are the options... car pools, minibuses etc? Been to CSSE site, so know about that. Thanks for any information.

Congratulations to your DS :) . But did you actually investigate how he would get there - unless you drove him there and back, or found someone you didn't already know who also had a DS making the same journey - before you named the school on your CAF? The public transport options don't seem particularly straightforward?

Thank you for the reply, ToadMum.

We have considered the transport long and hard before applying, and would be able to drive (or drive half way) for DS on our way to work (although not ideal). Now, we are just trying to explore more options for the journey to the school, and would like to know if any families doing the similar journey who might like to share or collaborate. CRGS is a such good school and DS is very keen... so we have to try our best.

I wonder if the route to either Westcliff, or Southend boys would be easier for your son than attempting to travel to CRGS (which tends to be quite a difficult and time consuming route) each day, assuming that his mark was particularly high, could he instead still get a place at either of the above?

I'm sorry, but the words 'stark', 'staring' and 'mad' (in precisely that order) immediately spring to mind when considering a daily commute from Bishops Stortford to WHSB or SHSB

What mode of transport do you have in mind?

SHSB: train BS - Liverpool St - Prittlewell 2 and a half hours, plus a fifteen minute walk, to arrive by 8.30am

WHSB: train BS - Liverpool St. Walk or tube to Fenchurch St, train to Chalkwell, 20/25 minute walk to school. Timings? I gave up...

Thank you, Daddy Cool, for your message. We are considering all options. The commute is a big issue. We will continue trying to make contact with others in our area. Thanks.

Honestly, forget Westliff or SHSB from your area....they are good schools , but too far as ToadMum already described.. Even if you do a mix of public/private transportation it is a long treck.....The bus from e.g. Witham to both of the schools is approx 55/60 minutes. From your area it is at least 40/45 minutes by car to Witham. so we talk about 1:45 hours in a best case scenario.. you are better off driving the 1 hour from your area to CRGS -which is still a sacrifice- for both you and your DS. Also consider after-school clubs/activities, which all the CSSE schools recommend and encourage. They have boarding facilities at CRGS -I'm just mentioning it...

Only in the sixth form, unfortunately...

Re extracurricular activities, we've yet to have a 'SHSG style' departure for a school trip from SHSB - the girls' school favours 3am starts - but plenty of 5 - 6am ones. And late night returns with attendance required at the normal time the next day. Still, there's a nice hotel up the road at the airport now :) .
