The Primary NC changed about four years ago so some material published earlier than that may have errors. Remember question books may not be written by people who actually know much about Primary maths ...

Algebra can confuse a problem and is not easy to teach properly. Throwing 'x' at a problem usually does not help - many children end up afraid of algebra.
As You know from past discussions I have the greatest respect for your knowledge and skills, however checked with DS2 last night and he is sure a question similar to this type did appear in the Gloucestershire exam last year.

Well then someone should complain as it disadvantages some children.

Bucks has made it clear that content won't go beyond Year 5.

Which is quite odd that it appears in a lot of CEM practice questions.

Don't know about anyone else but I can't ever recall teaching this is yr5. Yr 6 yes but not 5

CEM does not produce practice material - clearly the 'other' publishers need to be challenged.

But they do produce the test... which as has been stated has included such topics:-)

The Bucks CEM did not have them ... it's down to the LAs who direct CEM.

That my point though, it does appear in some tests, so you can't just say algebra is not needed which was your assertion.

It should NOT be needed - the question you posted should have been reported.

Who arranges the Gloucester 11+? If its the Grammars then they need to be challenged on fairness.
