Music Practical Assessment-Is the guitar ok as chosen inst?

Post by Iam »

Dear all , I am a newbie here.

I read all the info about the two-stage music test.

Are the candidates usually taking the assessment on a piece in a guitar?

I have only known of candidates performing on more classical instruments, such as Piano, Violin, Flute etc.

Or is it that the 1st part, the Written Music Aptitude test is more suited (and therefore likely to be more successful)
for classical instrument players?

Any comments/ experiences are appreciated.
Thx

Guitar is absolutely fine. Candidates sing as well as play a variety of instruments and I know of children who have played guitar for the audition.

My DD's friend played the guitar for her assessment and received an offer from Watford girls.

That is very helpful, thank you both.

For the Written Music Aptitude Test, how are candidates best prepared?
Is there a Music Tutor presumably for that?(recommendations welcome)

She is currently taking "Music Theory" lessons in a small group format, but I expect that this may not be enough.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend all!

Hi Iam. My dd prepared for Music Aptitude via

http://www.hofnote.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and

http://www.e-musicmaestro.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

they are both excellent websites, especially hofnote, where you pay a small monthly fee and can do al the exercises you might expect in a music aptitude test.

Guitar is the fastest growing instrument in terms of interest at DAO. There is a large Guitar ensemble and it seems to get bigger ever time I see it.

I saw plenty of Guitars at the SW Herts test both years my dds sat it.

The written test is not specific to any instrument and in fact the highest mark I know of in the DAO music test which was 56/60 was obtained by a student I know who does not play any instruments at all and is not in any choir. DG

Since you can perform at A level on guitar and do graded exams, it would be very strange if it were not allowed.
